An exchange-traded fund bundles many shares or bonds into one product you can buy through a broker. For many beginners it is a simple way to invest broadly at low cost.

What to check

Look at the index the fund follows, its ongoing costs, whether it pays out or reinvests income, how it replicates the index and where the fund is domiciled, which can affect taxes.
