Many AI tools improve their models with the conversations people have with them. Whether yours are included depends on the product, your account type and a few settings that are easy to miss.

Where to look

Check the privacy or data controls page in the tool’s settings, then the terms for business and consumer accounts, which often differ. Look for wording about using content to train or improve models, and whether you can opt out.

A simple rule

Until you have checked, treat anything you paste into a chatbot as something you would be comfortable seeing in a shared document. Remove names, account numbers and client details first.
