A good garden path stays usable in rain, frost and summer heat. Materials and drainage matter more than the pattern.
Materials
Gravel is affordable and drains well but needs edging. Stone and clay pavers last for decades. Bark is soft underfoot and suits informal gardens but has to be topped up.
Drainage and planting
Give the path a slight fall so water runs off, and prepare a compacted base. Low planting along the edges softens the line without spilling onto the walking surface.
