A beginner’s plan for raised beds that survive the first summer

Soil, spacing and watering are where most first attempts go wrong.

Raised beds warm up earlier in spring, drain well and keep soil loose. The first summer is where most beginners run into trouble, usually with soil, spacing or water.

Fill it well

Use a mix of good topsoil and compost rather than bagged soil alone. Fill to the top, because the level drops as it settles over the first weeks.

Plan the watering

Raised beds dry out faster than ground beds. Water deeply and less often, mulch the surface and check the soil with a finger rather than going by the calendar.
