Designing a small living room that feels twice its size

Layout, light and furniture scale matter more than floor area. A method that works in rentals too.

A small living room feels larger when the eye can travel through it without interruption. Layout, light and the scale of furniture do more than square metres.

Layout first

Pull furniture slightly away from the walls, keep a clear path through the room and choose one main seating area. Raised furniture with visible legs shows more floor and feels lighter.

Light and colour

Use several light sources at different heights instead of one ceiling light. Light walls help, but a single deeper accent colour can add depth without closing the room in.
