Stone and quartz composites are hard-wearing and easy to clean. Wood is warm and repairable but needs oiling. Laminate is affordable and has improved a lot, though edges and joins show wear first.
Ask before you buy
Ask about heat resistance, stain resistance and how damage is repaired. A sample left on your current worktop for a week tells you more than a showroom.
